Network Cable Jack Tester

15. June 2007 Networking, ThinkGeek

When I recently moved into my new home, I thought I was set. The house came prewired with all the miles of cat5 cable I could ever need. I had my computer and cable router upstairs, and my Xbox 360 downstairs. I didn’t feel like shelling out $100 for an wireless adapter (an adapter!), so a pre-cabled house was a great thing to have.

When I pulled the cover off my in-wall switch, I realized I had a bit of a problem. The switch is a mess. Nothing is labled and there are actually two panels with patch cables going every-which-way inbetween them. The previous owner either knew exactly what he was doing or had no clue, but it is going to take some sorting out nonetheless. I headed down to Fry’s and they had a networking kit with a live link checker for $120. Bleh. Way too much for what I needed.

Glad to see my buddies at ThinkGeek had exactly what I need want need. I’m ordering their link checker this weekend so I can once again play Gears of War on Live! (I have barely been able to survive with out it).
