QUESTIONS THAT LOST LEFT UNANSWERED:
In my first post, I talked about the closure that the LOST producers gave us in 10 Questions That LOST Answered. The writing has been fantastic in that they gave us a 10 questions but they left us hanging on a lot of limbs. Some of these are from the past, and some are new as of last nights episode.
- Who fucking died? The casket and obituary in Jack’s flash forward has everyone asking who died. We know it’s someone that Jack would consider neither friend nor family, but still respect enough to show up to the funeral. We know that Jack attempts suicide after finding out about their death. We know it happened in LA. We know that Kate had no desire to attend the funeral. We know that whoever it is doesn’t have many friends in the future (although this isn’t saying much because after 90+ days on psycho island I wouldn’t be surprised if any of the survivors become recluse and alienate everyone in their lives). So here’s who I think are the candidates:
- Sawyer. I doubt it is Sawyer. But I bet the writers want us to think it so we’re suprised when it’s not. Kate’s discussion with Jack doesn’t really help that theory much.
- Sayid. I’d think that Jack would consider him at least a friend, but we don’t know how much time or distance has passed since the island.
- Locke. Again, this is a more obvious choice. So I’d rather not think it was him.
- Ben. Think about it. If years passed, and Ben somehow found his way back to mainland, Jack would be the type of person to pay his last regards to a formidable enemy. Also, it would make sense that Jack would want to try to kill himself after the news that Ben died. A big part of Jack’s life was The Island. Ben represents The Island. If Ben died, a large chapter of Jack’s life has just closed and Jack doesn’t think he can cope with it.
- Juliet. Jack has never been able to stay in a relationship. If things turned nasty between him and Juliet, he’d probably consider her “neither friend nor family”. As for the no show at the funeral, she created many enemies on the island and it wouldn’t be surprising if she continued walking that path. When Jack asked Kate about the funeral and said “I thought you’d be there”, Kate’s response was “Why would I?”.
- Michael. He betrayed his friends for a chance to escape the island. This left his “friends” obviously bitter.
- What’s up with Jack’s Dad? If that IS Future Jack, then why is saying stuff like “Call upstairs and talk to my Father. If I am drunker than he is, you can fire me!” and the prescription is from his Father’s office and not his. Although the prescription was a fake, he still made a scene of it. We also know that Jack had seen apparitions of his dad on the island in the past. Did the island resurrect his father? Was he never really dead? Is this another version of his dad? Perhaps one from a parallel universe? And who’s baby is Sarah pregnant with? She left Jack for his Dad, is that his half-brother (if that’s what you’d call it)?
- Who’s on the boat? If it’s not Penelope’s boat, then who is trying to find the island? My theory is it is the Hanso Foundation. Ben killed off the rest of the Dharma Initiative and formed an alliance with the others. He then jammed radio frequencies out and hijacked the only way onto the island. Hanso knows about the island, but if they lose their only way onto it, they don’t know how to get there. We know that the Earth’s magnetic field was disrupted when the hatch exploded. Penelope saw the EMP as a blip then magnetic field, we can assume others who were looking for the island did too.
- Speaking of Penelope…is she sending help? She knows where they are, she has an satellite communication feed that is open. If she can pinpoint the location of the originating signal, she’ll make the journey with her daddy’s money for sure. She’s against the Hanso foundation, so this would make for an intersting conflict if two groups of outsiders make their way to the island.
- Why the hell is Hurley still fat? OK, c’mon now guys. This isn’t a joke anymore.
- How far into the future was that Flashback? Are we talking years after the series here, or is it as early as next season? When do they get off the island? Is that the climax to the series or are we going to see a major twist here? We know that Jack has made dozens of transoceanic flights since his return, but does that indicate years of travel or just a few months of hysteria?
- Is Kate still wanted? Wasn’t there an international manhunt after Kate? Yeah, the agent that was after her died in the plane crash, but that doesn’t mean her case is closed. How is she walking around L.A. so freely when she couldn’t stay 5 feet in front of the secret service across international waters? Did she get a pardon? Did her mom come to her senses?
- Speaking of Kate…who’s she with? If not Jack, who’d she end up with after the island? When she talks with Jack, she says she has to get home to “him”. Who the fuck is “him”?! It would be almost too easy to believe it is Sawyer. Perhaps she hooked up with Sayid? We all know he likes the white meat. Maybe she falls for Hurley. It said that millions and millions of dollars helps make you look slimmer. Or…
- Still speaking of Kate…is she pregnant? Maybe returning “home to him” could mean that she has to get home to her son. On the island, the men produce five times as much sperm. She did the dirty with Sawyer a couple of times, and the series isn’t over.
- Is this all a parallel universe? That’s the big question. Locke’s dad was saying they were dead, and this is hell. The parachute lady said that all the passengers were dead when they found the wreckage. We see appearances of otherwise dead people all the time. There’s two Walts. Boone keeps making cameos. Jacob is a phantom. Locke seems to have accepted whatever his fate is. Think about it: two universes, two planes, crossing the dimensions in an explosion. Sound familiar? Donnie Darko anyone?
SO WHAT THE HELL AM I GOING TO DO UNTIL FEB 08?
Last summer they left us with an alternate reality game involving TV commercials, websites, and phone calls to take up our time. I didn’t care to participate because quite frankly the time commitment was too much and the potential reward payout (which was just more information) really wasn’t all that enticing. Besides, that’s what wikipidea is for! DAMN I wish there was a game this off-season to tide us over. I can’t get enough of it. Perhaps there is a game out there, or perhaps more clues will be released during the off months. One thing they know is they left people quenching for information.
So what will I be doing this next summer 9 months? I’ll be watching my Season 1 and 2 DVDs and extras for clues that they filled in with Season 3. It will be interesting to recourse some of my favorite LOST moments to see how well they tied the three seasons together so far. We know for a fact that they already have a series ender in mind, and they knew the outcome of the Oceanic 815 survivors from the beginning. Perhaps, knowing what I know now with Season 3 being over, I can get even more clues to the future of LOST.
The future of this series has become very exciting. With the flash forwards they are doing now, and the flash backs from the past, it will be interesting to see how the do eventually bring the two loose ends of this giant rope together.
Psst...if you enjoyed this post, make sure you subscribe to THE GEEK FEED!!
